This morning, while on my way to work, a Nirvana song came on the radio. As soon as I heard the first few notes, two extremely vivid memories came back to me. The first was a late night solo drive from Austin to Houston circa 1990 where I blasted the entirety of Nirvana's first album, Bleach, over and over for the duration of the drive. Not surprisingly, given the soundtrack, I got my first speeding ticket that night. The second is my brother and I sitting in my new apartment in San Francisco on New Year's Eve 1991 completely bummed out that we were missing the Nirvana / Chili Peppers / Pearl Jam show at The Cow Palace that night.
Certain songs just attach to moments and people that way. Those Nirvana moments weren't life changing or all that special, but they stuck. So, just for fun, here's a list of a few songs and the memories and people they conjure.
Whenever I hear The Old 97's, I think of my friend Jenny and a show we saw together in Austin.
When I hear Hot Rod Lincoln or Big Balls in Cowtown by Asleep at The Wheel, I think of a night spent at Gruene Hall with my friend Brené. I have a vivid memory of where in the hall we were standing and an image of her smiling face.
You Ain't Going Nowhere by the Byrds makes me think of two stepping with my brother. I can see his face and hear him singing in my ear.
Rodney Crowell's Above and Beyond makes me think of Bruce, who was my first true love. It was also my first real heartache and that song brings it back full force.
The first few notes of Supertramp's Logical Song and I'm back in my Dad's car in junior high and we're both singing along.
The Tubes and She's a Beauty bring back a night in 8th grade. Samantha and I (and a stolen pack of cigarettes) roaming around her suburban neighborhood dancing and singing in the middle of the street and not caring what anyone thought about us and the scene we were making. It's a favorite memory of mine.
Boy by Book of Love...first times and best friends.
Bon Jovi's Runaway and I can see the life size poster I had of Jon Bon Jovi mounted on my closet door like it's right in front of me. Don't judge me people, I loved that poster.
Green Day's Going to Pasalacqua or 2000 Light Years Away and I'm instantly transported to Gillman Street in Berkeley, CA. circa 1992 with my friend Seth. It was the most fun I have ever had discovering a new band and going crazy in a mosh pit. I also think about when I made Steven take me to see them in concert here in Houston when I was 8 months pregnant with my 2nd son, Finnian. People kept looking at us trying to size up why we were there...was I some elder unfortunate pregnant teen? or, where were the young kids that we must be escorting?
Steven has his own small library of songs that make me think of him from this Garth Brooks album that we both liked to Maroon 5's Sunday Morning to a particularly sweet, although sappy, Savage Garden song.
I could go on forever with memories of Van Halen, Prince, The Stray Cats, The Clash, The Breeders, Guns and Roses, Miles Davis...
What about you? I'd love to hear a few of yours, please share and comment away!
